Keyssa, a leading supplier of high-speed, contactless connectivity solutions, announced the introduction of the industry's first reference design for high-speed contactless "Kiss connection" that supports high-speed data and HD video with the same pair of KSS104M devices. Target applications include: Mobile phones, tablets, and gaming areas.
"With its mobile processors and graphics processing capabilities with PC-like capabilities, smartphones have become 'everything' devices in our lives," analyzed Keyssa CEO Eric Almgren. "Mobile games such as Fortnite and Kings Glory have created a new multi-screen/device-run format that can be played on devices ranging from small screens to large screens to mobile game consoles. Smartphone Processors "The ubiquitous game is moving forward. It's no wonder that Tencent's mobile game business sales exceeded its PC game business in 2017."
"As a result, high-speed data and video are becoming the key to smart phone applications," Mr. Almgren added. "This is not only for the 2.6 billion gamers worldwide, but also for professionals who are pursuing output efficiency. Unfortunately, due to the technical limitations of the metal Type-C connectors, today's smartphone designs cannot fully meet today's user requirements. , the ever-increasing processing power and graphics processing capabilities. Keyssa provides a reference design that can be put into production, designed to make smartphones take a new evolution. "
At the heart of this reference design is Keyssa's Kiss Connectors connector, a compact, all-solid-state connector that can be safely implanted inside the product's housing and can handle extremely high data rates up to 6Gbps. To send and receive data, and the transfer process is simply to "flip" one device and the other. The Kiss Connectors connector is designed to carry standard communication protocols, including USB SS, DisplayPort, PCIe, SATA, and low-speed protocols. At the same time, the connector is very compact, and the KSS104M is only 3mm x 3mm in size. This new contactless solution uses the same Keyssa KSS104M Kiss Connectors connector to switch between USB SuperSpeed protocol for data transfer at 5Gbps and 1080p/60 frame uncompressed DisplayPort video at 5.4Gbps data rate.
"Our USB/DP switchable reference design is a solution that fully implements the promise of Type-C connection technology by using the same non-contact Kiss Connectors for high-speed data and HD video transmission," said Keyssa Chief Product Officer Satish Ganesan said. "The reference design demonstrates that our products have the unique ability to use the same Keyssa connector for multi-protocol transmissions, while also meeting the requirements for miniaturized form factors and low power consumption in the mass mobile and gaming market."
This reference design has the following advantages:
  • Secure, point-to-point connections that do not require cables or metal connectors at extreme high frequency (EHF) frequencies, eliminating noise and electromagnetic interference (EMI) commonly found in spring-mounted thimble pins or Type-C metal connectors
  • Ability to implement USB SS and DisplayPort 1.2 protocol-based transmission using the same Keyssa device
  • Provide the required technical documentation and reference files so that design can be completed quickly and easily
  • Can be easily integrated with wireless charging schemes to form a complete solution for high-speed data, high-speed video and charging without cables
  • Support Connected World project for quick application (Please refer to press release: Foxconn, Keyssa, and Samsung launch the disruptive "Connected World" smartphone ecosystem)
  • Reference design is now available
The switchable USB/DP reference design can provide this capability to most smartphones on the market that are not yet equipped with high-speed connectivity, enabling system product providers to quickly add differentiated requirements for their products. Samples of this reference design have been provided to early customers and are now fully available. For more information, please contact info@keyssa.com
The convertible USB/DP reference design kit will be on display at the 2018 Taipei Computer Show
In the W Hotel suite at the Taipei Computer Show, Keyssa will exhibit this convertible USB/DP reference design kit and many other demonstrations of the Keyssa technology. Keyssa is currently arranging a separate meeting and exchange activity during June 6-8 (Wed.-Fri.). Please contact Keyssa for details.
