There is still a long way to go from 4G to 5G
Since last year's MWC, 5G has been a hot topic of the show. Although 5G has not yet been clearly defined and there are no clear standards, it has already started discussions on 5G application scenarios and even began to sketch out the 5G vision.
2016 MWC 5G is still hot. Compared with last year, although there has been no revolutionary progress, we cannot deny a small step forward.
This year, Ericsson demonstrated the prototype of the 5G wireless base station, demonstrating that the 5G air interface rate can support more than 25 GB/s. Ericsson also announced that it has established a 5G technology strategic partnership with Vodafone to work together to define industry standards, establish technical guidance, and develop product roadmaps.
It is also hoped that Huawei, which can define the 5G standard, also stated that it has joined NTT DOCOMO to open the world's first multi-user 5G technology verification field in Chengdu, China, and systematically validated the 5G new air interface technology and architecture.
During this year's MWC, Huawei also demonstrated with Deutsche Telekom the industry's first 5G end-to-end network slicing prototype to demonstrate the entire process of design, on-line, purchase, deployment, generation, and monitoring of slicing.
ZTE Corporation and China Mobile formally released the latest 5G high-frequency prototype and jointly demonstrated key technologies such as 10Gbps+ high-volume flow.
Not only telecommunication equipment manufacturers, chip makers such as MediaTek, Intel, and Qualcomm have made 5G technologies the focus of the show. MediaTek also cooperates with NTT DOCOMO to develop 5G network technology.
The International Telecommunication Union expects that the next generation of mobile technology 5G will be officially defined by 2020. Although what kind of technology 5G will be in the end, what kind of standard has not yet reached a consensus, but the future must be a 5G low latency, high-speed, high-density technology has become recognized.
However, compared to 4G technology, 5G will be a completely different form of technology implementation. Until the definition is undetermined in 2020, mobile communication technology will not change much.
4.5G and NB-IoT before 5G
Although revolutionary 5G technology has not yet arrived, but also can bring high speed, low latency and high density of 4.5G or LTE-E will become the necessary technology for the vacancy period before the 5G came. 4.5G is the natural evolution of 4G. It can increase the user rate and reach Gbps networks. The number of connections can also be from 20 million to 1 billion, and the capacity is greatly increased. The emergence of 4.5G technology has made the implementation of NB-IoT possible.
Narrowband Internet of Things has four major advantages: long battery life (more than 10 years), low cost (less than $5 per module), high capacity (a single cell can support 100,000 connections), and wide coverage (covering underground).
The use of NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things) was demonstrated at both Ericsson and Huawei booths. For example, by displaying sensor status in the garbage cans on the Huawei booth, it is possible to plan optimal routes for garbage trucks and save vehicle manpower; real-time monitoring of air, soil, water, and chemical hazards through sensors to help people better protect the environment Through the wireless sensor installed in each parking space, it helps people to manage and query all the roadside parking spaces in the city.
Ericsson also demonstrated the application of NB-IoT (narrow-band Internet of Things) in animal husbandry at the booth. The positioning function was achieved by installing chips on the sheep.
According to reports, telecom operators are very interested in NB-IoT. Some of the more aggressive operators, such as Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom, have started to use existing base stations for pre-deployment pilots. It is expected that pilot commercial deployments will be conducted in the second half of 2016 and formal commercial use will begin in early 2017.
Uneven heating and cooling: Terminals take full advantage
As mentioned above, there will be no revolutionary change in mobile communication technology in the next five years. Therefore, the industry's focus is more on the terminal side.
