NEC Releases White Paper on 5G Technology

At the occasion of the 2016 Mobile World Expo, NEC announced the release of three white papers related to next-generation 5G mobile communication systems. These three white papers are “Optimizing the Network Structure Provided by the Whole Internet of Things Platform”, “NFV C-RAN for efficient RAN resource allocation” and “Massive MIMO for high-capacity mobile access”. NEC promotes the convergence of these three technologies to achieve the most practical and economical solution to the 5G mobile network architecture.
To achieve the optimization of the network structure provided by the entire Internet of things platform
This white paper outlines a new network architecture for the Internet of Things. It must ensure the three capabilities of efficiency, reliability and real-time capabilities. NEC is considering a three-step migration plan, such as establishing a dedicated IoT network, introducing mobile edge computing (MEC) and coordinating between MEC and cloud to improve these three capabilities. In addition, NEC is developing context-aware control technology to ensure more flexible and optimized control of the network to accommodate the many devices connected to the Internet of Things.

NFV C-RAN for efficient RAN resource allocation
This white paper outlines the blueprint for NFV Cloud-Channel Radio Access Network (NFV C-RAN) technology. NFV C-RAN allows RAN resources to be dynamically and flexibly allocated. NEC's NFV C-RAN uses a proprietary approach to achieve efficient inter-cell interference suppression. The NEC's fronthaul architecture can reduce fronthaul requirements (such as delays) while coping with high-capacity data communications. In addition, this article describes the migration plan for 5G networks, including the concept of "cell virtualization."

Massive MIMO for high-capacity mobile access
This white paper introduces the newly developed Massive MIMO prototype for 5G small cells, including the A4 size block element active antenna system (AAS). Full digital beamforming is applied to this Massive MIMO, making it possible to obtain a more accurate beam with higher spectral efficiency. This new technology can provide high-speed next-generation mobile services and provide a significantly improved user experience (QoE) for all users and applications.
