Video is a great opportunity for operators. Operators have unique advantages in developing video services. The traditional carrier Serbia Telecom actively explored the upgrade of the network in the video-driven network transformation and achieved significant benefits.
Business transformation is the key to the development of enterprises. It is not only for traditional telecom operators, but also for some enterprises that have planned or already entered the telecommunication field. The development and promotion of new business applications is the key to business transformation. Creating a new business model is the core of business transformation. What will be the "next killer app" is a very compelling topic. For users, it is the most direct experience and experience; for service providers, including telecom operators and other service providers, the “next killer application” will undoubtedly be a video service.
Video Business Drives Network Transformation
From 2012, when the industry started to talk about video, the discussion on 4K video started in the next two to three years, video is a great opportunity for operators. Operators have unique advantages in developing video services.
First, operators have huge amounts of broadband users. The potential video demand is huge. Therefore, content providers will actively seek cooperation. Operators create a stable source of revenue by entering into profit-sharing agreements with content providers.
Second, the future of high-quality video is IP video. The network plays an important role here to ensure that the delay and other indicators are met. The network is owned by the operator and they can easily guarantee the performance of the video.
Third, users are naturally willing to pay less for a better video experience and content. Operators can often provide users with a cost-effective combination of television programs and broadband data services through bundled services.
Fourth, video products have localization, which is the ability of the local language. At this point, operators have advantages. The vast majority of operators are regional operators. Since broadband users and content users coincide, they can better meet the needs of users. Because the regional operator understands the network better, it needs to know more about the user's content needs and provide it.
Fifth, the development of video, especially high-definition video, and even 4K video, the general bandwidth can not support. For example, high-definition video requires a network of at least 8 Mbps, and 4K video requires a minimum bandwidth of 30 Mbps. If the bandwidth requirement is higher in a multi-user home environment, it can easily increase to 100 Mbps. Therefore, for high-definition video, a home usually needs 100 Mbps bandwidth, and for 4K video, it needs 1000 Mbps. For operators, it is necessary to invest in the network to enhance the bandwidth capacity through network modernization in order to meet the demand for high-definition video and 4K video. At the same time, through video services, operators can recoup their investments in broadband networks and receive the rewards they deserve.
Operators upgrade the existing network or build new fiber to modernize the network, accelerate network transformation, and support the development of video services. The traditional carrier Serbia Telecom has accumulated excellent practical experience in video-driven network transformation.
Network modernization for video services
Serbia is located in the southeast of Europe and is a landlocked country in the middle of the Balkan Peninsula. It has 7 million people and 2.5 million families. Serbia Telecom is the largest integrated operator and provides mobile, fixed network and video services.
Staged Business Success: Delivering High-Definition IPTV Services
In October 2016, Serbia Telecom completed the network modernization pilot construction in the central city of Aleksinac. In addition to upgrading and renovating the existing network, pilot projects will release high-definition IPTV services, and provide preconditions for users in the city and surrounding areas to issue 4K services. Currently, Serbia Telecom’s pay-TV business consists of 25 HD channels, over 250 SD channels, and an ever-enriching on-demand programme.
Through the modernization of the network, it is expected that the number of fixed broadband subscribers in the Aleksinac region will increase by 30% in the next three years, compared with the average annual growth rate of only 5% before the transformation. As a result of broadband acceleration and a better TV service experience, users' average monthly communications spending will continue to increase.
Network modernization goal
In 2014, Serbia Telecom upgraded its pay-TV service by deploying Huawei's multimedia service platform. However, the old network hinders the further development of high-definition video users and the introduction of 4K services. The limited bandwidth network that copper wire accesses becomes the bottleneck of its rapid development. Serbia Telecom is actively facing challenges and hopes to support future business development through network transformation. In order to support high-definition video and 4K strategy, Serbia Telecom launched a nationwide network transition in 2016 to modernize the existing network and expand the coverage of high-speed broadband.
The Serbian telecommunications network modernization strategy has three goals: 1. Complete the entire network for three years; 2. Universal coverage at 100Mbps; 3. Deploy future-oriented fiber access networks in high-value areas, and eventually become the market leader in the pay-TV industry.
Serbia Telecom’s medium and long-term goal is to provide differentiated services through the establishment of high-quality networks, making Serbia Telecom the leading operator of telecommunications and video services in the Balkans.
Transformation process
In the transformation project of Aleksinac, a pilot city for network modernization, Huawei provided Serbia Telecom with a zero-risk cutover solution, product solutions for the smooth evolution of the future, and business and network consulting services with its exclusive turnkey ( Turnkey's service has helped Serbia Telecom to achieve the goal of achieving the target bandwidth and delivery time for the entire network, and has made progress in phases.
The realization of copper cable recovery: the site is moving downwards, and the copper wire between the central office equipment (MSAN) and the central engine room is replaced with optical fiber and the copper wire is recycled.
The number of users grew: High-bandwidth and good HD video service experience after the network was modernized, and the number of users increased. The number of 50Mbps broadband users increased by 359%, while the number of 20Mbps broadband users increased by 84%.
Room Shutdown: In 139 center rooms, 53% of the machine rooms can be shut down to achieve full rent-reduction or a significant reduction in rent, and operating costs can be saved by 80,000 euros per year.
Accelerated time to market: Huawei Solution Cloud and serialized professional service tools have accelerated the pace of project delivery and have been able to shorten the time to market for business to six months.
Future outlook
Serbo Telecom CEO stated at the October 2016 Network Modernization Summit: "Based on the good market performance of the pilot projects in the Aleksinac region and cooperation with Huawei for more than 10 years, Serbia Telecom will deepen its strategic partnership with Huawei. We hope to continue cooperation on the All-IP Transformation project.”
Serbia Telecom has signed a network modernization framework contract with Huawei and will complete the upgrade of the entire network infrastructure through the All-IP Transformation project, laying the foundation for the better introduction of high-definition video and 4K services. The transformed network and business development will increase revenue, reduce operating costs, ensure faster business listing, and enhance user experience.
