CRM giant Salesforce to acquire MuleSoft for $6.5 billion

Salesforce announced today that it intends to acquire MuleSoft for US$6.5 billion. This is not necessarily the final purchase price, but the estimated price based on the company's stock, bonds, and cash inventories. According to Salesforce, the exact price has not yet been announced, but Salesforce does say that it is acquiring MuleSoft for $44.89 per share, which is 36% higher than yesterday's closing price.
In addition, each MuleSoft stock in this transaction is equivalent to $36 in cash and 0.0711 shares of Salesforce common stock.
MuleSoft was launched in 2006 and went public a year ago. After Reuters broke the news that the CRM giant was interested in MuleSoft, rumors began to rise this morning. MuleSoft has 1,200 customers. As a mature company, its addition will inject new power into Salesforce. It also provides them with an API integration engine that can help companies access cross-organizational data.
This is particularly important for Salesforce, who often collaborates with companies across enterprise systems. Since it built the artificial intelligence and machine learning layer that became Einstein, it needed to access the entire company's data. Companies like MuleSoft can give them this ability.
But of course, the acquisition of Salesforce is not just about technology, it can also be integrated into a growing product line. It will also receive key customers such as Coca-Cola, VMware, GE, Accenture, Airbus, AT&T and Cisco. Although Salesforce may already have a place in some of these companies, MuleSoft allows them to enter unreached areas and gives them the ability to expand their presence.
In addition, the company has a large revenue target. As of now, the company has reached a $10 billion revenue target faster than other software companies. And now, they have set the target to achieve $60 billion in revenue by 2034. There is still a long way to go, but having a company like MuleSoft that has revenues of nearly $300 million in the 2017 fiscal year will certainly help.
Ray Wang, founder and chief analyst at Constellation Research, said that this is the future of building microservices. "This is at the heart of the Salesforce acquisition strategy. They must integrate, coordinate and manage microservices in the roadmap for the future," he said. "The world driven by artificial intelligence requires upstream and downstream microservices."
Microservices are a way of building applications that are made up of small, unique parts, and are no longer the single, large application that we have preferred in the past. This makes changes and updates easier and more efficient.
Brent Leary, owner and head of CRM Consulting's CRM Essentials, views the deal from the customer's perspective. "Then, it shows the importance of the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence for Salesforce to create a successful platform for its customers in the future," he said.
"This also reinforces their perception. They believe that deeper investment clients will achieve better return on investment and growth potential, and can then be extended to other enterprise applications outside the core," Leary added.
Like all such transactions, it needs to pass regulatory review first, but once it passes, it is expected that the transaction will be completed by the end of July.
