In 2017, U.S. automated marketing telephone complaints increased significantly

According to a recent report from the Federal Trade Commission, complaints about automated marketing telephones increased significantly last year and have increased five-fold since 2009. The report pointed out that in FY2017, the agency received more than 370,500 complaints about automated marketing calls per month, up from 63,000 per month in 2009. This involved a total of 4.5 million automated marketing telephone complaints, plus an additional 2.5 million manual marketing telephone complaints. In comparison, there were 3.4 million automated marketing telephone complaints and 1.8 million manual marketing telephone complaints in 2016.
According to the report, the number of automated marketing calls is steadily increasing, as cheap Internet phone services and automatic dialing, and spammers are increasingly vulnerable to hiding their true identity and location. In 2017, people reported more deceptions of “neighbourhood” numbers, where the phone appeared to be from the local area code. According to the complaint's response, the topic most welcomed by the telemarketers was debt relief.
People also report junk calls about vacations and timeshares; guarantee and protection plans for junk calls, as well as “impersonator” calls from companies, governments or family and friends. Most automated marketing calls are illegal, regardless of whether the callee's number is registered.
At present, the U.S. government punishes offenders with increasingly large fines. In mid-2017, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) imposed a fine of US$120 million on a company that sent automated marketing phones in Florida, penalizing him for tricking the identity of callers.
